Scott, Claude

Hull Pals Memorial Post. SGT CLAUDE SCOTT 12/511. Born in 1881 Claude was the fourth of six children to George and Susannah Scott of 7 College Grove, Wakefield. His father was a Book Binder and Claude had followed him into the trade. The family moved to Barnsley and from here Claude travelled to Hull to enlist in mid-September 1914 queuing outside City Hall with the proud sons of that city to join the fledgling 12th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, ‘The Sportsmen’, 3rd Hull Pals. His journey through the war is all too familiar by now- training at East Yorkshire camps throughout 1915; shipping from Devonport that December bound for Alexandria, Egypt; garrisoned to defend Suez from potential Turkish attack until February 29th when they left Port Said bound for Marseilles and the train north to Armentieres before their blooding in the trenches of the Western Front. His death too is pitifully familiar. Claude Scott was killed in action at Serre on the Somme on 13th November 1916 and is buried in Euston Road Cemetery; he was 35 years old. The photograph shows the memorial in Barnsley cemetery which bears his name. His war pension went to Sarah Elizabeth Scott, at 14 Raikes Place, Blackpool, who he married after enlisting.
