Shalgosky, Bernard

BORN HULL 25/07/1894. SON OF ISAAC AND ROSIE SHALGOSKY, OF 30 NILE STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). ONE OF TEN CHILDREN. HE WORKED AS A GENERAL CLERK AND WINE CRUSH MAKER (1911 CENSUS).

HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 22/11/1915 AND RECALLED TO SERVICE ON 22/01/1916. HIS ARMY RECORDS DESCRIBE HIM AS 5 FOOT 9 INCHES TALL, 34 INCH CHEST, 140 LBS WEIGHT, ‘GOOD’ PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT. HE ARRIVED IN FRANCE ON 02/07/1916 WITH THE 11TH EYR. ADMITTED TO HOSPITAL WITH SHELL SHOCK ON 29/07/1916. TRANSFERRED TO 9TH YORK & LANCS BATTALION ON 23/09/1916. KILLED IN ACTION ON 09/04/1917, AGED 22. HE WAS UNMARRIED AND HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE RETURNED TO HIS MOTHER, ROSIE. HE IS BURIED AT THE RAILWAY DUGOUT CEMETERY AT YPRES.

HIS BROTHERS, WILLIAM, MORRIS ABRAHAM AND ISSY SHALGOSKY ALSO SERVED IN THE WAR. HE LEFT FOUR SISTERS, DORA, EDIE, SARAH AND LEAH.

HIS NAME IS ALSO RECORDED AS “GOSKY, K SHAL”, ON THE WESTERN SYNAGOGUE WW1 MEMORIAL, LINNAEUS STREET, HULL/ HOW ARE THE MIGHTY FALLEN IN THE MIDST OF BATTLE/ IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE FOLLOWING WHO MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE/ IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918/ (Names)/ NATION SHALL NOT LIFT UP SWORD AGAINST NATION, NEITHER SHALL THEY LEARN WAR ANYMORE.

HIS BROTHER ISSY, SERVED WITH THE ROYAL GARRISON ARTILLERY & LIVED AT 85 LINNAEUS STREET, HULL, WITH HIS WIFE FLORENCE AND THEIR THREE CHILDREN. LIKE BERNARD HE ALSO WORKED IN THE WINE MAKING BUSINESS.
