BORN HULL 28/08/1894. KNOWN AS “JACK”, SON OF LIEUTENANT COLONEL, GEORGE HUBERT SHAW (1865-1915), COMMANDER OF THE 1/4TH EAST YORKSHIRE (TERRITORIAL) REGIMENT, SENT TO FRANCE IN 1915 AND MRS CLARA ANN INGLEBY (1870-1935), OF 32 WESTBOURNE AVENUE, HULL, AND BRIAR GARTH NORTH FERRIBY. HE HAD THREE BROTHERS AND A SISTER.
JACK WAS A FARMER IN CANADA. HE EMIGRATED ON 03/09/1913. ENLISTED AT MILLET, ALBERTA, CANADA. SERVED WITH THE 15TH BATTALION, CANADIAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCE. WAS KILLED ON 26/09/1916, AGE 21. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE VIMY MEMORIAL, FRANCE. HE LEFT £1,447 IN HIS WILL TO HIS MOTHER, AT 32 WESTBOURNE AVENUE (PROBATE ADDRESS). HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED INTHE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 15/01/1917.
HIS BROTHER, ARTHUR GODFREY SHAW (1892-1972), BECAME A MAJOR IN THE 1/4TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. ANOTHER BROTHER, PHILIP SHAW (1893-1978) ANOTHER FARMER, LIVING IN ALBERTA, CANADA, ALSO SERVED WITH THE CANADIANS IN WW1.
HIS FATHER WAS KILLED ON 24/04/1915, YPRES. HIS MOTHER CLARA ANN SHAW PLACED A PLAQUE AT HULL HOLY TRINITY CHURCH PLAQUE, IN MEMORY OF HER HUSBAND AND SON LOST IN THE WAR. SHE ALSO SPONSORED A STAINED GLASS MEMORIAL WINDOW AT HULL MINSTER AND COMMISSIONED THE HULL “GOLDEN BOOK” MEMORIAL TO ALL HULL MEN LOST IN THE WAR.
