Showell, Reginald

Born Barrackpore, India, 1882. Son of Maria and soldier, George Washington Cloudesley Showell.

He enlisted in the Territorial Royal Artillery in 1898.

Reginald married Rhoda Williamson, at Bradford, in 1906. He was a window cleaner living at 6 Leonard’s Avenue Alexandra Road, Hull (1911 census). Husband of Rhoda Showell, of 64, Prospect Street, Hull and 21, Melrose Street, Anlaby Road, Hull and 26, Beaver Road, Beverley, East Yorkshire (Army records address).
Enlisted at Ramsgate, Kent, on 14 June 1914. Served with the 1st Kent Battery, RFA.

He left Bombay for the Middle East on 14 May 1916. Served in the Royal Field Artillery, “A” Bty. 222nd Bde. Died of chronic malaria, in Iraq, on 23/07/1916, aged 34.

His army effects were left to his widow, Rhoda, who moved to Christ Church Boys School, Jubblepore, India.

She was paid a weekly war pension of 17/6 shillings in India. She engaged in lengthy correspondence with the authorities for her husband’s medals. She described Reginald,  as a good father and husband.

He is Commemorated on the Basra Memorial, Iraq.
