BORN HULL OCTOBER 1901. SECOND SON OF JOSEPH SIDDLE & PHOEBE LEDGER, OF 7 REYOLDSON STREET, NEWLAND AVENUE AND AT 1 PEARSON STREET, HULL. ONE OF FOUR SONS. HE WAS THE SON OF A BRASS FINISHER AND GAS FITTER. HE ENLISTED IN THE NAVY AND WAS AN APPRENTICE ON THE STEAM SHIP ‘ISLEWORTH’. SUNK BY THE U17, OFF THE ISLE OF WHIGHT, ON 30/04/1918, AGED 16. ONE OF 29 CREW LOST. HIS NAME IS LISTED ON THE CLIFTON STREET SCHOOL ROH, AND THE HULL MERCHANT NAVY ROLL OF HONOUR.
HIS PARENTS WERE AWARDED £47 COMPENSATION FROM THE SHIP OWNERS FOR HIS LOSS, AS THEY WERE DEPENDENT ON JOSEPH FOR THEIR HOUSEHOLD DUTIES (HDM 14/09/1918)
