Skelton, Henry

BORN HULL 23/03/1886. SON OF JOHN SKELTON AND FANNY HULLAH, OF 31 JAMES STREET, HOLDERNESS ROAD. SON OF A COAL HEAVER ON SEA GOING SHIPS.

EDUCATED AT BLENKIN STREET SCHOOL, HOLDERNESS ROAD. HENRY SKELTON LIVED AT 9 ARTHUR TERRACE, BARNSLEY STREET, HULL. HE PREVIOUSLY WORKED FOR THE WILSON SHIPPING LINE, AS A FIREMAN ON THE STEAMERS FROM HULL TO NEW YORK AND BOSTON.

HE MARRIED CATHERINE CLARK, AT ST PHILLIPS CHURCH, SCULCOATES, ON 11/04/1908. THEY LIVED WITH THEIR TWO CHILDREN AT 9 ARTHUR TERRACE, BARNSLEY STREET, HULL (CWGC NAVY ADDRESS)  AND 14, MAY TERRACE, WALKER STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS).

AT OUTBREAK OF WAR JOINED THE TRAWLER ‘EAGLE’ FOR MINE SWEEPING OPERATIONS. HE HAD BEEN WITH SHIP ONLY SIX WEEKS WHEN THE VESSEL CAPSIZED IN SEVERE WEATHER ON 13/01/1915. HE WAS ONLY 29 YEARS OLD AND LEFT A WIDOW AND TWO SONS, ARTHUR AND HENRY SKELTON, AGED TWO AND EIGHT MONTHS RESPECTIVELY.

HIS DEATH AND PHOTOGRAPH WERE REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 15TH JANUARY 1915. *
HE IS RECORDED IN THE DE RUVIGNY ROLL OF HONOUR, VOLUME 1.
