BORN SUTTON UPON HULL, 04/12/1892. A PROFESSIONAL SOLDIER. ELDEST SON OF SHEPLEY VICKERS SMITH (1864-1940) & CLARA HARRIS (1870-1926), OF 58. HOPWOOD STREET, HULL AND 33, PRINCES ROAD, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESSES). HE HAD ONE BROTHER, SHEPLEY VICKERS SMITH (1898-1918).

HIS FATHER WAS AN ASSISTANT SUPERINDENTENT WITH PRUDENTIAL INSURANCE AND HAD SERVED IN THE SAME REGIMENT. THE FAMILY LIVED AT 14 FREEHOLD STREET, HULL, 41 MIDDLETON STREET, HULL (1911 CENSUS), 33 PRINCES ROAD, HULL AND 58 HOPWOOD STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESSES)

EDUCATED AT MIDDLETON STREET SCHOOL, HULL. HE ENLISTED AS A BUGLER IN HULL, ON 15/10/1907. SERVED WITH THE 2ND KING’S OWN YORKSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY, IN SOUTH AFRICA, HONG KONG AND SINGAPORE WHERE HE WAS SUFFING FROM MALARIA FEVER WHEN THE WAR BEGAN. DESPITE DOCTOR’S ADVICE HE INSISTED ON BEING POSTED ABROAD ON ACTIVE SERVICE. HE FOUGHT AT HILL 60 WHERE HE LOST HIS LEG ON 05/04/1915. DIED OF WOUNDS, ON 07/04/1915, AGED 23.

HIS PHOTOGRAPH WAS PUBLISHED IN THE DE RUVIGNY ROH.

HIS ONLY BROTHER, BANDSMAN, SHIPLEY VICKERS SMITH, 10428, KOYLI, WAS KILLED AT POZIERES, 04/03/1918, AGED 20.
