BORN HULL 1890. SON OF CHARLES SMITH & FRANCIS ALMA ALLISON, OF 10 ROSMEAD STREET, NEW BRIDGE ROAD, HULL (1911) AND 1 JUNCTION TERRACE, HUME STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS) AND 60 NORNABEL STREET, HOLDERNESS ROAD, HULL. SON OF AN OIL MILL PRESSMAN. HE HAD TWO BROTHERS AND A MARRIED SISTER, FRANCES PEXTON. HIS FAMILY WERE EMPLOYED IN THE OIL MILLS. HE WORKED AS AN OIL CAKE MOULDER WITH HIS BROTHER CHARLES.
HE ENLISTED IN HULL. POSTED TO FRANCE, ON 19/03/1915. SERVED IN THE 12TH WEST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. DIED OF WOUNDS, ON 09/04/1917, AGED 28. HE IS BURIED AT DUISAN BRITISH CEMETERY, FRANCE. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS FATHER CHARLES, AT 60 NORNABEL STREET, HOLDERNESS ROAD, HULL.
HIS NAME IS RECORDED ON ST MATHEWS CHURCH WW1 MEMORIAL, BOULEVARD.
HIS BROTHER, PRIVATE, CHARLES ARTHUR SMITH, 1ST EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT, WAS KILLED ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME, ON 1ST JULY 1916. HIS OTHER BROTHER, JOHN ALLISON SMITH, SERVED IN THE EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT, WAS WOUNDED IN THE GROIN, BUT SURVIVED THE WAR.
HIS BROTHER IN LAW, ALFRED ERNEST PEXTON, WHO LIVED WITH THE FAMILY AND WAS MARRIED TO HIS SISTER, FRANCES, SERVED IN THE EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT.
