BORN HOOK, GOOLE 1887. SON OF GEORGE WHITEHOUSE SMITH (1849-1917) AND FANNY WAREHAM (1858-1913), OF 20 SISTER’S TERRACE, TADMAN STREET, HULL. SON OF A DRILLER AND ENGINEER. HE HAD ONE BROTHER, WILLIAM AND SIX SISTERS.

HE MARRIED MARY ALICE HARDING, AT ST JAMES CHURCH, HULL, ON 1ST FEBRUARY 1908, AGED 20.

HIS WIFE, MARY ALICE SMITH (1884- ) AND THREE DAUGHTERS, ETHEL, STELLA AND IRENE, LIVED AT 70 DIVISION ROAD, HULL (1911 CENSUS) & 110, BEAN STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS).

HE WAS A FORMER BOILER MAKER AND RIVETER. AND EAST RIDING GARRISON TERRITORIAL.

HE SERVED AS BATTERY SERGEANT MAJOR, IN THE ROYAL GARRISON ARTILLERY. HE DIED OF WOUNDS, ON THE DAY, WAR ENDED. AGED 31. BURIED AT PREMONT BRITISH CEMETERY, AISNE, FRANCE. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “WE HAVE LOST BUT HEAVEN HAS GAINED ONE OF THE BEST THE WORLD CONTAINED”.

HIS NAME IS LISTED ON ST MATTHEWS CHURCH ROH, BOULEVARD. THIS WAS IS 1918 MILITARY VOTERS ADDRESS.

HIS BROTHER, WILLIAM FRANCIS SMITH SERVED AS, 118634, 510809, IN THE ROYAL GARRISON ARTILLEY AND LABOUR CORPS. HE WAS DISCHARGED IN 1919 WITH SHELL SHOCK.
