BORN HULL 1900. YOUNGEST SON OF HARRY SMITH (1860-1911) & HELGA MATILDA SMITH (1866-1948), OF 10, PEARSON AVENUE, NEWLAND PARK, HULL. SON OF A BREWERY DIRECTOR, FROM NORTHALLERTON. HIS MOTHER WAS NORWEGIAN. HE HAD ONE BROTHER AND THREE SISTERS.
HE JOINED THE ROYAL AIR FORCE, IN AUGUST 1917. COMMISSIONED INTO THE ROYAL FLYING CORPS. REPORTED MISSING AND KILLED ON 15/09/1918, AGED 18. HE WAS SHOT DOWN FIGHTING ENEMY SCOUT PLANES AND HIS MACHINE WAS SEEN TO LOSE CONTROL. HE HAD BEEN WITH HIS SQUADRON FOR LESS THAN THREE WEEKS.
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 08/10/1918. *
HE LEFT £167 IN HIS WILL TO HIS WIDOWED MOTHER, AT THIS PROBATE ADDRESS. HE LEFT SISTERS FRED, EDITH AND BROTHER JAMES. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE HULL TECHNICAL COLLEGE WW1 MEMORIAL.
HIS BROTHER, JAMES CARTER SMITH, ALSO SEVED AS A SECOND LIEUTENANT IN THE ROYAL AIR FORCE.
