BORN HULL 09/08/1892. SON OF CHARLES HESELTINE & ADA LOUISE SMITH, OF 2, BRITANNIA PLACE, PORTER STREET. HULL & 329, HESSLE ROAD, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESSES). HE WORKED AS A COMPOSITOR FOR MESSRS GRASSAIN PRINTERS, SCALE LANE, HULL.

HE MARRIED ADA (FEATHERSTONE ), ON 30/01/1918. THEY LIVED AT 16, GRANVILLE TERRACE, WEST DOCK STREET & 61, KINGS BENCH STREET, HULL.  EMPLOYED BY MR GASSAIN’S, PRINTERS, SCALE LANE, HULL.

HE ENLISTED IN THE HULL PALS OM 08/09/1914. SERVED IN EGYPT. WAS WOUNDED BY A SNIPER AT NIEPPE FORREST, IN MARCH 1918, AND SLIGHTLY GASSED IN AUGUST 1918. HE WAS KILLED BY A SNIPER, CARRYING A MESSAGE OVER OPEN GROUND. HE WAS KILLED ALMOST FOURS YEARS FROM THE DATE THAT HE ENLISTED, ON 08/09/1918, AGED 25. HE HAD BEEN MARRIED FOR ONLY SEVEN MONTHS. HE IS BURIED AT PONT-D’ACHELLES MILITARY CEMETERY, NIEPPE, NORD, FRANCE. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 30/09/1918. *

HIS COMMANDING OFFICER WROTE ” YOUR HUSBAND WAS A SPLENDID SOLDIER AND MOST COURAGEOUS IN THE FIELD. HE WAS GREATLY RESPECTED BY OFFICERS, NCO’S AND MEN AND WILL BE SADLY MISSED BY THE WHOLE COMPANY.” HIS WIDOW FLORENCE LATER MARRIED JOSEPH HENRY WARCUP.
JAMES’ DETAILS ARE RECORDED IN THE DE RUVIGNY ROLL OF HONOUR, VOLUME 5. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 30/09/1918, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *
