BORN HULL 05/05/1898. SON OF GEORGE SAMUEL & SARAH JANE SMITH (1865-1940), OF 487 HESSLE ROAD, HULL (1901 CENUS), 169 ST GEORGES ROAD, HULL (1911 CENSUS) AND 4 ENDEAN AVENUE, TORONTO. A LAW STUDENT WHO EMIGRATED TO CANADA. GRADUAE OF RIVERDALE HIGH SCHOOL AND MEMBER OF RIVERDALE METHODIST CHURCH.

DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT 7.5 INCHES TALL, 36 INCH CHEST, BROWN EYES, DARK BROWN HAIR, AND METHODIST RELIGION:

ENLISTED AT TORONTO, CANADA, ON 06/05/1916, AGED 18. POSTED OVERSEAS IN MARCH 1917, WITH THE 198TH BUFFS REGIMENT. SERVED WITH THE 19TH CANADIAN INFANTRY, “D” COMPANY. ARRIVED IN FRANCE, ON 23/02/1918. HE DIED OF MULTIPLE GUNSHOT WOUNDS, AT ARRAS, ON 12/05/1918, AGED 20.

HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE ARRAS MEMORIAL, FRANCE.
HE LEFT BROTHERS, FRED WILLIAM AND FRANK AND SISTERS, MARY AND GLADYS. HIS MOTHER AND BROTHERS EMIGATED TO CANADA AFTER WW1.
