SS Hilda Lea, built by Wilton’s Engineering & Slipway Co., Rotterdam in 1916 and operated at the time of her loss by The Shipping Controller (J. Cormack & Co.), London, was a British steamer of 1328 tons. On December 23rd, 1917, Hilda Lea, on a voyage from Blyth to Rouen with a cargo of coal, was sunk by the German submarine UB-35 (Karl Stöter), 24 miles SxE from St Catherine’s Point. 1 person was lost. Allen Tony 20/02/2008 HILDA LEA SS was a 1,328grt defensively-armed British merchant steamer. On the 23rd December 1917 when on route from St. Helens for Roen with a cargo of 1,720 tons of coal and when 24 miles S by E from St Catherines, Isle of Wight, Uk when she was torpedoed without warning by German submarine UB-35 and sunk. 1 life lost. ref. used:Wendes David, South Coast Shipwrecks
