BORN HULL 1886. SON OF GEORGE STANLEY & ELIZA WILLIAMS STEPHENSON, OF THIS CWGC ADDRESS. BROTHER TO ALICE AND ETHEL. A REGULAR SOLDIER. HE SERVED AS A GUNNER IN THE ROYAL FIELD ARTILLERY, FOR TWELVE YEARS, HE WAS AWARDED THE DISTINGUISHED CONDUCT MEDAL (DCM) ON 14/04/1915, AT BARJISIYAH, TURKEY, “FOR VERY GALLANT CONDUCT, WHEN HE BEING, THE ONLY SIGNALER LEFT WITH THE 63RD BATTERY, RECEIVED AND SENT MESSAGES TO THREE STATIONS AND KEPT UP COMMUNICATIONS, UNDER VERY HEAVY FIRE AND FROM SNIPERS ON A FLANK”. (LONDON GAZETTE 05/08/1915). HE WAS CAPTURED AT KUT AND DIED AS A TURKISH PRISONER OF WAR, ON 17/06/1916, AGED 30. HIS MOTHER COLLECTED HIS DCM, AT HULL’S GUILDHALL ON 12TH JULY 1919. HE IS BURIED AT BAGHDAD (NORTH GATE) WAR CEMETERY. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “GOD BE WITH YOU TILL WE MEET AGAIN”.
