William Stather

BORN COTTINGHAM 1882. SON OF TOM WILLIAM STAHER & JANE (BACHELOR), OF SOUTH STREET, COTTINGHAM. A GARDNER.

HE MARRIED IN 1910. HIS WIFE BARBARA PETRIE BUTCHART, LIVED AT 1, WAINFLEET AVENUE, COTTINGHAM, (1911 CENSUS) AND LATER 197, KING STREET, COTTINGHAM, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS).

HE ENLISTED AT HULL, OCTOBER 1915. SERVED WITH THE HOUSEHOLD CAVALRY AND EAST RIDING YEOMANRY. DIED OF LIVER CANCER, WHILE ON ACTIVE SERVICE, ON 13/08/1917, AGED 34. BURIED AT COTTINGHAM MUNICIPAL CEMETERY. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION READS, “THY WILL BE DONE”.

HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW, BARBARA AND THREE CHILDREN, JAMES WILLIAM, FLORENCE MARY AND FRANK.

HIS NAME IS LISTED ON THE COTTINGHAM WAR MEMORIAL AND ON A WW1 MEMORIAL PLAQUE IN COTTINGHAM’S MEMTHODIST CHURCH.
