BORN HULL 1896. SON OF THOMAS ROBERT & THE LATE MARY STEELE, OF 241, ANLABY ROAD AND 369, BEVERLEY ROAD, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESSES.

UNDER THE TUITION OF THE REV. LEONARD SYKES. LAWRENCE STEEL WAS PREPARING TO BECOME A WESLEYAN MINISTER BEFORE THE OUTBREAK OUT WAR.

HE ENLISTED IN THE WEST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT AND WAS PROMOTED TO SERGEANT. AFTER 10 DAYS IN THE TRENCHES HE WAS BADLY WOUNDED IN FRANCE. HE RETURNED HOME AND WAS OFFERED A COMMISSION TO WORK IN ENGLAND. HE DECIDED TO RETURN TO FRANCE WHERE HE THOUGHT HE COULD DO HIS BEST WORK. HE WAS KILLED IN ACTION ON THE 25TH APRIL 1916. A MEMORIAL SERVICE WAS HELD FOR HIM IN HULL BY THE REV. SYKES. THE DETAILS WERE REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON THE 26TH MAY 1916.

SGT. LAWRENCE STEEL IS COMMEMORATED ON THE HULL TECHNICAL COLLEGE MEMORIAL.
