BORN HULL 07/10/1891. SON OF MARY CLAPPISON (1857-1934) & WILLIAM STOCKTON (1855-1904), OF 107, HAVELOCK STREET, HULL (1911 CENSUS) AND 35, TYNE STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). HE HAD SEVEN BROTHERS AND ONE SISTER. EMPLOYED AS A MARINE TRIMMER.
LOST AT SEA ON THE TRAWLER, “COTSMUIR”, 22/02/1917, AGED 26. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 8TH FEBRUARY 1917 WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON ST JOHN THE BAPTIST CHURCH MEMORIAL, NEWINGTON, HULL.
FIVE OF HIS BROTHERS SERVED DURING TYE WAR AT SEA, TWO ENLISTED IN THE ARMY. HIS BROTHER, CHRISTOPHER SERVED IN MINESWEEPERS AND ANOTHER WAS WOUNDED IN FRANCE.
On 02/02/1917 the HMT COTSMUIR (FY1537) disappeared on passage from River Tyne to River Humber. All 13 crew were lost. On was service, the ship never fished commercially. The following Hull men were lost in the crew of 13.
