Suddaby, Thomas (Tom)

BORN HULL. SON OF THOMAS SUDDABY (1858-1949) & BETSY ANN LAZENBY (1861-1947), OF 43, SHERBURN STREET, HULL. HE HAD ONE BROTHER, ERNEST, AND FOUR SISTERSS. EMIGRATED TO SOUTH AFRICA. SERVED AS LANCE CORPORAL, 4728, 2ND SOUTH AFRICAN DIVISION. KILLED AT THE SOMME, ON 12/10/1916, AGED 36.

HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 06/12/1916. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS FATHER, THOMAS.
On the 12th October 1916, the 2nd and 4th South African Infantry attacked Snag and Tail Trenches. The assault died away because of machine guns nests, placed well back in prepared positions, which caught the attacking waves at long range.
