BORN HULL 1895. SON OF EMMANUEL SULTAN (1865-1928) & ROSE COHEN (1868-1914), OF 16 , GREAT PASSAGE STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). SON OF A SHOP KEEPER. HE HAD A BROTHER, ABRAHAM, AND THREE SISTERS, REBECCA, MINNIE AND ETTY. A DRAPER BY TRADE.
HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 12/12/1915, AGED 20 YEARS AND 10 MONTHS. HIS ARMY RECORDS DESCRIBE HIM AS 5 FOOT, 6 INCHES TALL, 135 LBS WEIGHT, 36.5 INCH CHEST, ‘GOOD’ PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT. TRAINED WITH THE 14TH RESERVE EAST YORKSHIRE BATTALION. HE ARRIVED IN FRANCE, FROM FOLKESTONE TO BOULOGNE, ON 18/06/1918. JOINED THE MACHINE GUN COMPANY IN THE FIELD, ON 05/07/1916. KILLED ON THE SOMME, ON 10/07/1916, AGED 21. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE THEIPVAL MEMORIAL TO THE MISSING. UNMARRIED. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS FATHER, EMMANUEL.
HIS NAME IS ALSO RECORDED ON THE HULL WESTERN SYNAGOGUE, LINNAEUS STREET, HULL/ HOW ARE THE MIGHTY FALLEN IN THE MIDST OF BATTLE/ IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE FOLLOWING WHO MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE/ IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918/ (Names)/ NATION SHALL NOT LIFT UP SWORD AGAINST NATION, NEITHER SHALL THEY LEARN WAR ANYMORE.
