Sunderland MM, James William

Born Hull 1888, Son of James William Sunderland (1858-1942) and Lilian Grubb (1866-1937), of 15 Ivy Grove, Pulman Street, Hull (1911 Census). Son of a railway Goods Guard. He had two brothers and two sisters. Worked as a Railways Clerk and lived at Hebden Bridge, Yorkshire.

He enlisted at Halifax. Served in the 9th West Riding Regiment. Promoted to Lance Corporal and awarded the Military Medal (MM), for bravery. Promoted to Sergeant. Killed in action, on 26/08/1918, aged 30. Buried at Warlencourt British Cemetery, France. His grave inscription, reads, “THEIR GLORY SHALL NOT BE BLOTTED OUT”.
