BORN HULL 22/07/1895. FULL NAME; GEORGE ROBERT MARMADUKE STANBURY-TAYLOR. ONLY SON OF ROBERT WRIGHT & CLARA LOUISE HODGSON TAYLOR, OF BAYSGARTH PARK, BARTON UPON HUMBER. HIS FATHER WAS A BARRISTER AND JUSTICE OF THE PEACE. GEORGE WAS EDUCATED AT ETON AND TRINITY COLLEGE, CAMBRIDGE.
HE WAS GAZETTED TO 2ND LIEUTENANT, THE ROYAL FIELD ARTILLERY, IN FEBRUARY 1915. SERVED IN FRANCE AND FLANDERS FROM MARCH 1917. HE WAS KILLED DURING A GAS ATTACK, AT PASSCHENDAELE, ON 20TH SEPTEMBER 1917, AGED 22. BURIED IN THE MENDINGHEM BRITISH CEMETERY. HIS COMMANDING OFFICER, WROTE, “HIS DEATH WAS A GREAT LOSS TO HIS MANY FRIENDS, AND ALSO A GREAT LOSS TO THE BRIGADE, FOR ALL HE DID WAS GOOD.” ANOTHER OFFICER, WROTE “TAYLOR WAS SUCH A GOOD CHAP AND VALUABLE OFFICER.” HIS HOUSE MASTER AT ETON, SAID, ” HE WAS A DEAR, GOOD BOY, ALWAYS CHEERFUL, AND FULL OF KINDLY THOUGHTS FOR OTHERS.”
HIS DEATH IS RECORDED IN THE DE RUVIGNY ROLL OF HONOUR, VOLUME 4. ALSO ON THE TRINITY COLLEGE WW1 MEMORIAL, CAMBRIDGE.
HE WAS HEIR TO BAYSGARTH HOUSE BUILT IN 1730, WHICH PASSED TO HIS SISTER, CLARE RAMSDEN. SHE GAVE IT TO THE PUBLIC IN 1930.
