BORN HULL 1892. SECOND SON OF JOHN WILLIAM TAYLOR (1865-1939) & ALICE BALFOUR (1866-1934), OF 65, MARLBOROUGH AVENUE, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). SON OF A CASHIER. HE WORKED AS AN INSURANCE CLERK. ARTICLED WITH MR FAWLEY JUDGE IN PROFESSIONAL LIFE. HE ENLISTED IN “A” SQUADRON EAST RIDING YEOMANRY IN 1913.
GAZETTED INTO THE 2ND ROYAL FIELD ARTILLERY (NORTHUMBERLAND BRIGADE), ON 09/07/1915, WHERE HE WAS A GUNNERY INSTRUCTOR. HE WAS ACCIDENTALLY KILLED IN TRAINING. IN A DUG OUT AND GAVE ORDERS FOR THREE ROUNDS TO BE FIRED. THE FIRST ROUND WAS A DIRECT HIT AND HE ORDERED CEASE FIRING. AS HE WAS LEAVING THE DUGOUT A SECOND SHOT WAS FIRED (NOT HEARING HIS ORDER) AND HE WAS STRUCK IN THE HEAD BY A BULLET. HE DIED OF WOUNDS, ON 12/06/1916, AGED 24, AT RIPON. BURIED HULL WESTERN CEMETERY.
HIS NAME IS LISTED ON THE HYMERS COLLEGE WW1 ROLL OF HONOUR & THE RAMC MEMORIAL, AT WENLOCK BARRACKS, HULL. ALSO LISTED ON THE HULL TECHNICAL COLLEGE WW1 MEMORIAL, PARK STREET, HULL
HIS ELDER BROTHER, CYRIL BALFOUR TAYLOR, WAS AWARDED THE MBE AND DIED IN 1973.
