BORN HULL 22/08/1895. GRANDSON OF ISSAC TAYLOR, OF AIR STREET, HULL. HIS MOTHER SARAH ANN THORNTON, LIVED AT 697 WASHWOOD HEATH ROAD, WARD END, BIRMINGHAM AND 21 STATION ROAD, HUDDERSFIELD (WAR PENSION ADDRESS).
HE ENLISTED IN THE ROYAL NAVY, ON 22/06/1914. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 7 INCHES TALL, 36 INCH CHEST, BROWN HAIR, GREY EYES. EMPLOYED AS A NAVAL ARMOURER. KILLED IN ACTION AND LOST AT SEA, AGED 23, ON 16/07/1918. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 15/08/1918. COMMEMORATED AT PLYMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL.
The Royal Navy sloop HMS Anchusa was sunk on 16th July 1918 by the German submarine U-54 (Hellmuth von Ruckteschell), off the north coast of Ireland. From her complement of 100, 78 were killed.
