HE JOINED THE YORK AND LANCASTER REGIMENT AND WAS DISCHARGED ON 26/10/1908. WORKED AS A DOCK LABOURER. SENT TO WAKEFIELD PRISON IN 1910 FOR STEALING A BICYCLE. ENLISTED AGAIN IN THE 11TH EYR, AT HULL, ON 31/05/1911.
HE MARRIED ADA SARAH WILSON (1871-1954), ON 24/09/1914, AT HULL. HIS WIFE ADA AND DAUGHTER, NORA THOMPSON, LIVED AT 21, CAROLINE STREET, HULL (ARMY ADDRESS) AND 11, DUKES TERRACE, MARMADUKE STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS), DESCRIBED IN HIS ARMY RECORDS, AS 5 FOOT 6 INCHES TALL, 124 LBS, 37 INCH CHEST, 34 INCH WAIST, BLUE EYES, BROWN HAIR. RELIGION: CHURCH OF ENGLAND.
ROBERT HAD A VERY POOR DISCIPLINARY RECORD IN THE ARMY. HIS MISDEMEANORS WERE MANY, AND INCLUDED 21 DAYS DETENTION ON 25/8/1914. ANOTHER 21 DAYS DETENTION ON 30/09/1914. SENT TO FRANCE ON 25/10/1914. LOST 8 DAYS PAY FOR ABSENCE ON 28/02/1915. 21 DAYS LOST PAY FOR ABSENCE ON 14/04/1915. 14 DAYS LOST PAY ON 12/06/1915. SENTENCED FOR 6 MONTHS FOR ABSENCE ON 4/10/1915. 14 DAYS DETENTION ON 19/03/1916. SENT TO SALONIKA ON 19/08/1916, WHERE HE CAUGHT MALARIA.. INVALIDED TO ENGLAND ON 21/07/1917. LOST 12 DAYS PAY FOR ABSENCE ON 26/09/1917. DISCHARGED AS UNFIT ON 17/12/1917 WITH “PERIODIC PARALYSIS AGGRAVATED BY MILITARY SERVICE.” HE DIED AT HOME ON 11/05/1919 AND IS BURIED IN HULL WESTERN CEMETERY. HIS NAME IS LISTED ON HULL’S REFORM STREET ROLL OF HONOUR.
