BORN WAKEFIELD 1895. SON OF WILLIAM & ANNIE ELIZABETH THORNES, OF 2 WINDERMERE AVENUE, REDBOURNE STREET, HULL. HE WORKED AT RANKS FLOUR MILLS, CLARENCE STREET, HULL, BEFORE THE WAR. RESIDED AT 55 CONSTABLE STREET, HULL. ENLISTED HULL. SERVED WITH THE 1ST EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. MORTALLY WOUNDED ON 27TH JULY 1915. HE DIED ON 31ST AUGUST 1915, AGED 19, AT THE QUEEN’S CANADIAN HOSPITAL, SHORNECLIFFE, KENT.
HE WAS REPORTED BADLY WOUNDED IN THE HULL TIMES ON THE 11TH SEPTEMBER 1915, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *
HE IS BURIED AT HULL WESTERN CEMETERY. HIS NAME APPEARS ON THE WALKER STREET MEMORIAL BUT IS MISPELT AS SAM ‘THOMAS’. HIS DEATH AND PHOTOGRAPH APPEAR IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON THE 6TH SEPTEMBER 1915. * HE IS ALSO LISTED AS KILLED ON THE REDBOURNE STREET ROLL OF HONOUR (Hull Daily Mail 13 September 1916)
