BORN HULL 08/12/1889. SON OF WILLIAM THORNTON (1863-1933) AND ALICE MARIA WHITING (1863-1927). HE HAD FOUR BROTHERS AND A SISTER. SON OF AN ENGINE DRIVER, FOR THE NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY LINE. ALFRED WAS EDUCATED IN SELBY. SERVED AS A FIREMAN ON THE YORK CORPORATION TUGS. JOINED THE WEST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT, ON THE 15/11/1915. KILLED IN ACTION AT YPRES, ON 11/06/1916, AGED 26 AND IS BURIED THERE. HIS DEATH IS RECORDED IN THE DE RUVIGNY ROLL OF HONOUR, VOLUME 2, PAGE 294.
HIS BROTHER, ABLE SEAMAN, WILLIAM CHAPMAN THORNTON, HMS “GOOD HOPE”, WAS DROWNED IN THE NAVAL ACTION, OFF CORONEL, ON THE COAST OF CHILIE, ON 01/11/1914, AGED 26.
