BORN HULL 1893. ONLY SON OF WILLIAM THORNTON (1865-1910) & KATE COCKERILL (1864-1901). LIVED WITH AUNT, HARRIET COCKERILL, AT 13, MONTROSE AVENUE, STANLEY STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). BEFORE THE WAR HE WAS ON THE CLERICAL STAFF OF MESSRS BLUNDELL & SPENCE CO. HIS ARMY RECORDS DESCRIBE HIM AS 5 FOOT, 7.5 INCHES TALL, 34-36 INCH CHEST, PROBLEMS WITH EYES, TEETH AND UNEXPLAINED FITS, SOBER, ERNEST, TRUSTWORTHY AND HARD WORKING.
ENLISTED AT HULL, ON 21/12/1915. POSTED TO FRANCE, ON 05/05/1916. HE SERVED WITH EARL FAVERSHAM’S KING’S ROYAL RIFLE CORP (YEOMEN) AND FOR TWO YEARS, SAW SERVICE IN FRANCE AND ITALY. HE CONTRACTED CONSUMPTION AND WAS INVALIDED HOME WITH ANKLE SPRAIN, IN MARCH 1918. HE WAS DIAGNOSED WITH TUBERCULOSIS AND DISCHARDED FROM THE ARMY AS UNFIT. AWARDED THE SILVER BADGE.
DIED OF CONSUMPTION, ON 21/06/1918, AGED 24 AND WAS BURIED AT HOME IN HULL.
HIS MILITARY FUNERAL WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 28TH JUNE 1918, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *
HE LEFT ON SISTER, DORIS THORNTON, WHO LIVED NEAR WITHERNSEA.
