George Thorpe HMS Cressey

BORN HULL 15/08/1892. SON OF ARTHUR AND SARAH THORPE, OF 4, POTDEN PLACE, FOUNTAIN ROAD, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). ONE OF NINE SIBLINGS. HE HAD NO FATHER. HIS MOTHER LARGELY SUPPORTED THE CHILDREN. THE FAMILY LIVED AT 8, ETON PLACE, PROVIDENCE ROW, (1911 CENSUS). HIS BROTHER IN LAW, MR F.P. PLANNER LIVED AT 26, BERKSHIRE STREET, HULL AND RECEIVED THE NEWS OF HIS DEATH .

GEORGE WAS EMPLOYED AS A COAL CARRIER. HE ENLISTED IN THE ROYAL NAVY IN MAY 1911 AND HAD BEEN IN THE NAVY FOR THREE YEARS. HE SERVED AS STOKER FIRST CLASS, ON  HMS ‘CRESSEY’, WHICH WAS SUNK BY SUBMARINE, ON 22/09/1914, WITH THE LOSS OF 560 LIVES. HE WAS AGED 22. COMMEMORATED ON THE PORTSMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL.

HIS WAR PENSION WENT TO HIS MOTHER SARAH WHO MOVED TO 5, FERN AVENUE, FLEET STREET, STEPNEY LANE, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS)
HIS NAME IS LISTED ON THE CLIFTON STREET SCHOOL MEMORIAL AND RECORDED AS KILLED ON HULL’S CENTRAL STREET ROLL OF HONOUR (HDM 17/11/1916).
HIS DEATH AND PHOTOGRAPH WERE REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 5TH OCTOBER 1914. HIS PHOTOGRAPH WAS ALSO PRINTED IN THE HULL & LINCOLNSHIRE TIMES, ON 10TH OCTOBER 1914. *
