HE ENLISTED IN MOSS SIDE, MANCHESTER, ON 11/12/1915, AGED 19 AND 1 MONTH. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 7 INCHES TALL, 128 LBS, 35 INCHES, BLUE EYES, BROWN HAIR & SCAR OVER LEFT EYE. ARRIVED IN FRANCE, ON 30/08/1916. SERVED AS PRIVATE, 5737, 4TH KING’S LIVERPOOL REGIMENT. KILLED IN ACTION, ON 01/01/1917, AGED 40. UNMARRIED. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOWED MOTHER.
HE IS BURIED AT VLAMERTINGHE MILITARY CEMETERY, BELGIUM. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “NO MOTHER NEAR TO CLOSE HIS EYES, FAR FROM HIS NATIVE LAND HE LIES”.
