BORN HULL 09/07/1898. SON OF DANIEL HEWITT (1870-1941) & MARY ADELAIDE BENNETT (1869-1929). SON OF A MECHANICAL ENGINEER.HE HAD FIVE BROTHERS AND TWO SISTERS. THE FAMILY LIVED AT 5, ASH GROVE ROAD, GOODMAYNES, ESSEX (WAR PENSION ADDRESS),
HE ENLISTED IN ESSEX, AS PRIVATE, GEORGE SPILMAN BENNETT TODD, OF THE 9TH ESSEX REGIMENT. HE DIED OF WOUNDS, ON 24/03/1916, AGED 17.
HE IS BURIED AT VERMELLES BRITISH CEMETERY, PAS DE CALAIS, FRANCE. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “REST IN PEACE MAY OUR LIVES PROVE WORTHY OF HIS SACRIFICE”.
HIS BROTHER, GORDON HEWITT TODD, WAS FORMERLY, PRIVATE, 6534, OF THE LONDON REGIMENT. HE TRANSFERRED TO THE MACHINE GUN CORPS AND DIED ON 22/08/1918, AGED 22. GORDON IS COMMEMORATED AT THE ETAPLES MILIATARY CEMETERY, FRANCE. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “MAY WE PROVE WORTHY OF HIS SACRIFICE”
