Born Blackwell, London, 5 June 1868. Son of James Tomlinson (1836-1921) and Rose E McCarlin (1837-1898).
Joined the Highland Light Infantry on 10 Aug 1888. Served over 13 years in the East Indies and throughout the Boer War.
Married at Hull on 25 Dec 1897. As a civilian he lived with his wife, Mary Elizabeth Grange (1878-1954) and eleven children at (1911 Census) & 137, St Paul Street, Hull (War Pension address).
He re-enlisted when war began and was posted to France on 18 May 1915. He served nearly four years continually in France, with the Highland Light Infantry and labour Corps. He was discharged on 27 May 1919 and died in Hull on 6 Feb 1924, aged 55.
