Born Castleford, 1898. Son of John Henry Tomlinson and Jane Ann Armitage, of 180 Blevoir Street and later Top End Cottage, Cliffe, Selby, Yorks. One of seven children. employed as a Clerk, by the Hull Co-Operative Society. Enlisted Hull, on 08/05/1915. Described as 5 foot 8.5 inches tall, 135 lbs, 35 inch chest and of ‘good’ physical development. He served in Egypt and was sent to France on 08/03/1916. Killed in action on 09/02/1917, aged 20. He was described by his Commanding Officer as an “excellent soldier.” His body was not found and he is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial to the missing. He was unmarried and his army effects went to his father. His death was reported with this address on 28/02/1917 and 02/06/1917. *
