Corporal, Robert Tungate, (1891-1917)

BORN RISEHOLME, YORKSHIRE, 1890. SEVENTH CHILD OF CHARLES & ELIZA TUNGATE, OF 52, NORWOOD, BEVERLEY.

A FORMER RAILWAY SHUNTER, FOR THE NORTH EASTERN RAILWAYS. HE WAS ALSO A MEMBER OF THE BEVERLEY BOROUGH POLICE FORCE. HE LIVED WITH BROTHER GEORGE AT 29, BERKSHIRE STREET, HULL.

HE MARRIED NANCY WEBSTER IN 1914. HIS WIFE NANCY TUNGATE, LIVED AT BADSWORTH, PONTEFRACT, YORKS & 20, WOODS LANE, BEVERLEY (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). THEY HAD ONE SON, CHARLES WEBSTER, BORN ON 27 JULY 1915.

HE ENLISTED AT BEVERLEY IN 1915. SERVED WITH THE 4TH COLDSTREAM GUARDS. DIED OF WOUNDS, ON 03/08/1917, AGED 26, DURING THE THIRD BATTLE OF YPRES. HE IS  COMMEMORATED ON THE YPRES MENIN GATE MEMORIAL,

HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 03/09/1917.

HIS NAME IS RECORDED ON THE BEVERLEY WW1 WAR MEMORIAL.

Nancy, his wife received a letter from Robert’s company officer expressing his sympathy and describing Robert as reliable, hardworking and brave. “A splendid example to the men who loved him”. Robert was the first member of Beverley Police Force to have been killed in the war. He was 26 years old.

His widow was awarded a weekly war pension of 18/9 shillings on 18 Jan 1918.
