BORN SCULLCOATES, HULL, 1885. ONLY SON OF WILLIAM TRAVES TUNNICLIFFE (1858- ) & HANNAH COLREIN (1867-1897), OF 12, JAMES RECKITT AVENUE, GARDEN VILLAGE, HULL. WORKED AS A SAWMILL LABOURER IN A SHIP YARD. LODGED WITH HIS SISTER ELIZABETH, AT 20, RICHMOND TERRACE, KENT STREET (1911 CENSUS) AND AT 217, JAMES RECKITT AVENUE, HULL.
ENLISTED HULL, ON THE 02/09/1914, AGED 29 YEARS AND 3 MONTHS. ARMY MEDICAL RECORDS DESCRIBE HIM, AS 5 FOOT 8 INCHES TALL, 134 LBS WEIGHT, 36 INCH CHEST, BROWN HAIR, BLUE EYES, FAIR COMPLEXION, CHURCH OF ENGLAND RELIGION AND A DISTINCT MOLE IN THE MIDDLE OF HIS BACK. HE WAS TRANSFERRED TO FRANCE ON 25/08/1915. WOUNDED ON 20/09/1916 WITH A GUNSHOT WOUND TO THE HEAD. RETURNED TO SERVICE A MONTH LATER. POSTED TO THE 13TH DURHAM LIGHT INFANTRY. HE WAS KILLED IN ACTION ON 13/05/1917, AGED 32. HE WAS UNMARRIED AND HAD SERVED 2 YEARS AND 255 DAYS. HE LEFT SISTERS ELIZABETH ANN SMALES & ETHEL MOSS. HIS PURSE, A KNIFE AND TWO DAMAGED FRENCH FRANC NOTES WERE RETURNED TO HIS FATHER IN OCTOBER 1917. WILLIAM TRAVES TUNNICLIFFE IS BURIED AT THE RAILWAY DUGOUTS CEMETERY, WEST-VLAANDEREN, BELGIUM. HIS GRAVE READS, “THY WILL BE DONE”.
HIS SISTER, MRS J. SMALES OF 12, JAMES RECKITT AVENUE, WROTE A MEMORIAL TO HIM IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 13/05/1918.
