BORN GRAYS THURROCK, ESSEX, 1891. ONLY SON OF SARAH JANE GIBSON (1867-1940) & LATE ROBERT WALTER TURNBULL (1866-1892), OF 21 WARWICK STREET, EAST HULL. HE WAS WORKING IN AUSTRALIA AS A COOK WHEN WAR BEGAN.

HE ENLISTED AT LIVERPOOL, IN NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA,  ON 10/11/1914. HIS ARMY RECORDS DESCRIBE HIM AS 5 FOOT, 4 INCHES TALL, 11 STONE, 4 LBS WEIGHT, 36-39 CHEST SIZE, FAIR COMPLEXION, BLUE EYES, LIGHT BROWN HAIR, CHURCH OF ENGLAND RELIGION.

HE WAS PROMOTED FROM THE RANKS AND WOUNDED TWICE IN THE ARM & LEG AT GALLIPOLI, ON 19/05/1915. PROMOTED TO LIEUTENANT ON, 05/08/1916. AT MOUCQUET, RECEIVED BOMB WOUNDS TO BOTH LEGS, ON 18/08/1916. REJOINED HIS BATTALION, ON 27/10/1916. KILLED IN ACTION, AT “SWITCH TRENCH”, NEAR FLERS, ON 23/12/1916, AGED 25 .

HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON THE 6th JULY 1915 AND 18TH JANUARY 1916, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *

HIS AR,Y EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOWED MOTHER, WHO REQUESTED A WAR PENSION ON 08/03/1920, AS HAD FALLEN ON HARD TIMES.
