BORN HULL 17/2/1876. SON OF WILLIAM HENRY UPFOLD (1850-1908), A ROYAL MARINE COLOUR SERGEANT & HIS WIFE MARIA DURHAM (B. 1859) , ST PAUL’S STREET, HULL. WILLIAM WAS AN ONLY CHILD AND THE FAMILY MOVED FREQUENTLY AS PART OF HIS FATHER’S ROYAL MARINE DUTIES. THEY WERE LIVING IN GILLINGHAM,KENT (1891), HULL (1891), STANLEY, YORKS (1901) AND 10 HEDON ROAD, HEDON (1911).
WILLIAM MARRIED IN DUBLIN IN 1903. WIFE AGNES JANE FORSYTHE (1883-1972) LIVED AT 6, TORQUAY VILLAS, ROSMEAD STREET, HULL (HULL DAILY MAIL ADDRESS, 16/10/16) WITH THEIR CHILDREN WILLIAM HENRY, ROSE ELLEN, AND CHARLES DURHAM UPFOLD.
WILLIAM WORKED AS A MARINE FIREMAN (1911 CENSUS). HE JOINED RECKITT’S FITTERS DEPARTMENT, ON 24TH JULY 1911.
HE WAS LOST AT SEA WHEN HMS ‘HAWKE’ WAS SUNK BY THE SUBMARINE U-9, OFF ABERDEEN, IN NORTH SEA, ON THE 15TH OCTOBER 1914. THE SHIP WAS HIT BY A SINGLE TORPEDO, QUICKLY CAPSIZED, KILLING 524 OFFICERS AND MEN, INCLUDING THE CAPTAIN. THERE WERE 70 SURVIVORS.
WILLIAM’S DEATH AND PHOTOGRAPH ARE REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 23RD OCTOBER 1914. *
HE IS LISTED IN DE RUVIGNY’S ROLL OF HONOUR AND COMMEMORATED ON CHATHAM NAVAL MEMORIAL, KENT.
