James Augustus Verney

BORN HULL 1895. ONLY SON OF JAMES VERNEY & ADA SARAH HEPWORTH, OF 12, GOODWIN STREET, HULL (ARMY ADDRESS) AND 17, BOTANIC TERRACE, CONVENT LANE, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). HE HAD THREE SISTERS.

A PAINTER BY TRADE. WORKED FOR J W BAILEY, 3, BAKER STREET, HULL, FOR SIX YEARS. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 4 INCHES TALL, 121 LBS WEIGHT, 34-35 INCH CHEST, BLUE EYES, LIGHT BROWN HAIR, “FAIR” PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT, CHURCH OF ENGLAND RELIGION.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 07/09/1914. JOINED THE 1/5TH EYR CYCLISTS IN SEPTEMBER 1914. TRANSFERRED TO THE 11TH EYR (HULL PALS) AND SERVED IN EGYPT AND FRANCE. TRANSFERRED TO THE 8TH EAST LANCS. REGIMENT, ON 22/05/1016. BADLY WOUNDED ON THE SOMME IN JULY 1916 (GUNSHOT WOUNDS TO THE SHOULDER). RETURNED TO ENGLAND ON 27/06/1916. DISCHARGED ON 01/07/1917. DIED ON 01/11/1918, AGED 24. BURIED AT HULL HEDON ROAD CEMETERY.

HE DIED JUST WEEKS BEFORE THE WAR ENDED AGED 24. HIS NAME IS LISTED ON ST MARY’S CHURCH MEMORIAL, LOWGATE, HULL.

REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 19TH JULY 1916 WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *
