BORN HULL AUGUST 1893. THIRD SON OF JOSEPH VIVIAN (1864-1928) & CLARA SMITH (1865-1932), OF 95, WESTBOURNE AVENUE, HULL. SON OF THE MANAGING DIRECTOR AND COMPANY SECRETARY OF THE RED CROSS FISHING FLEET, HULL. ONE OF EIGHT BROTHERS.
EDUCATED AT HULL GRAMMAR SCHOOL. HE WORKED AS A SALESMAN FOR MESSRS, PICKERING & HALDANE, AT HULL FISH DOCK.
GILBERT ENLISTED IN “HULL COMMERCIALS” AS A PRIVATE SOLDIER, AND WAS QUICKLY PROMOTED TO CORPORAL. HE WAS LATER COMMISSIONED AS SECOND LIEUTENANT, IN THE 4TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. HE HAD BEEN IN FRANCE SINCE OCTOBER 1915 AND SEEN A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF FIGHTING. WOUNDED ON THE SOMME. HE DIED OF WOUNDS, AT 35 GENERAL HOSPITAL, CALAIS, ON 22/07/1916, AGED 24.
HE LEFT £226 IN HIS WILL TO HIS FATHER. HIS BROTHERS ALBERT, PERCY, NORMAN & JOSEPH ALSO SERVED AT SAME ADDRESS.
GILBERT VIVIAN IS RECORDED ON THE HULL GRAMMAR SCHOOL ROLL OF HONOUR. HIS NAME IS ALSO RECORDED ON THE HULL METHODIST CHURCH ROH, PRINCES AVENUE. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 24TH JULY 1916.
HE IS BURIED AT CALAIS SOUTHERN CEMETERY, PAS DE CALAIS, FRANCE. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “THIRD SON OF MR & MRS JOSEPH VIVIAN OF WESTBOURNE AVE. HULL”
