Pte, Harry Waldby, 4th EYR

BORN HULL 1897. ONLY SON OF JOHN RICHARD WALDBY (1853-1924) AND ANNIE ELIZA BELL (1873-1948), OF 6, RICHMOND TERRACE, BEAN STREET, HULL (1911 CENSUS). SON OF A PAINT GRINDER. PRIOR TO WAR, HE WAS AN ATTENDANT AT BEVERLEY ROAD BATHS.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 04/08/1914. SERVED IN “D” COMPANY, 1/4TH TERRITORIALS AND WAS CALLED ON THE 4TH AUGUST 1914 WHEN WAR BEGAN. HE ARRIVED IN FRANCE, ON 17/04/1915, WITH THE 1/4TH EAST YORKSHIRE BATTALION. WAS KILLED IN ACTION, IN FRONT OF THE TRENCH, ON LISTENING POST DUTY. WHILE SITTING UP LOOKING FOR RELIEF TO COME, HE WAS HIT BY A SNIPER AND DIED IMMEDIATELY. HE WAS ONLY 18 YEARS OLD.

HE IS LISTED ON THE ST MATTHEWS CHURCH & CITY ENGINEERS MEMORIAL. HE IS ALSO RECORDED ON THE BEAN STREET ROLL OF HONOUR (Hull Daily Mail 11 October 1916).

HE LEFT A SISTER & MOTHER. HIS DEATH AND PHOTOGRAPH ARE REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 18TH NOVEMBER 1915. *
HE IS BURIED AT CHAPELLE-D’ARMENTIERES NEW MILITARY CEMETERY. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “EVER IN THOUGHT”.
