BORN HULL 18/12/1885. SON OF ANTHONY WALSH (1843-1912) AND CATHERINE WALSH (1844-1926). SON OF A BRICKLAYER. BOTH HIS PARENTS WERE BORN IN IRELAND. ONE OF ELEVEN CHILDREN AND THREE SONS LOST IN THE WAR. THE FAMILY LIVED AT 14, NEWTON COURT ALDBORO STREET IN 1881; 3, SCOTTS PLACE, SCOTT STREET IN 1901; 4, WOODBINE TERRACE, RODNEY STREET IN 1911 AND 5, WOODBINE AVENUE, WATERLOO STREET, HULL, IN 1916. HE WAS KNOWN AS “TONY” AFTER HIS FATHER. THE FAMILY WERE ROMAN CATHOLIC. HE WORKED FOR THE LEE SMITH OIL MILLS, WITH HIS BROTHERS.
HE MARRIED, ON 12/06/1915, AT ST PATRICK’S CHURCH, HULL. HIS WIFE FLORENCE ADA CAWKWELL & ONE SON. JOSEPH WALSH (BORN 16/11/1915), LIVED AT 115 CAMPBELL STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS).
HE ENLISTED IN HULL ON 17/11/1914, AGED 28. HE WAS DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT 7 INCHES TALL, 143 LBS AND A ‘VERY GOOD’ PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT. HE SERVED IN EGYPT FROM 15/12/1915. TRANSFERRED TO FRANCE ON 08/03/1916. WAS WOUNDED AND CAPTURED, AT SERRE VILLAGE, ON 13/11/1916. HE DIED OF WOUNDS IN ELBERFELD, COLOGNE, GERMANY, AS A PRISONER OF WAR, AGED 30.
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 27/02/1917, 02/01/1918 & 27/12/1918. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW, FLORENCE.
HIS NAME IS LISTED ON ST CHARLES’ CHURCH BORROMEO WW1 MEMORIAL, JARRATT STREET, HULL.
HIS BROTHER PTE, ANTHONY WALSH (1874-1916), 4689 YORK AND LANCS, HAD BEEN DISCHARGED FROM THE ARMY SUFFERING FROM MANIA AND DIED IN BEVERLEY ASYLUM, IN MAY 1916. HIS OTHER BROTHER PTE, THOMAS WALSH, 8TH YORK & LANCS, WAS KILLED AT THE SOMME, ON 1ST JULY 1916.
