BORN HULL 1880. SON OF ANTHONY WALSH (1843-1912) AND CATHERINE WALSH (1844-1926), OF 6, ETTY GROVE, GORDON STREET, HULL (ARMY ADDRESS).
SON OF A BRICKLAYER. BOTH HIS PARENTS WERE BORN IN IRELAND. ONE OF ELEVEN CHILDREN AND THREE SONS LOST IN THE WAR.
THE FAMILY LIVED AT 14, NEWTON COURT, ALDBORO STREET, HULL (1881 CENSUS); 3, SCOTTS PLACE, SCOTT STREET, (1901 CENSUS); 4, WOODBINE TERRACE, RODNEY STREET, HULL (1911 CENSUS); 5, WOODBINE AVENUE, WATERLOO STREET, HULL, (1916 ADDRESS) AND 6, ETTY GROVE, GORDON STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS).
HE WAS EDUCATED AT HULL TRUANTS INDUSTRIAL SCHOOL, ELM TERRACE, HULL.
HE WORKED AS A DOCK LABOURER AND OIL MILL LABOURER. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 7 INCHES TALL, 37-39 INCH CHEST, 168 LBS WEIGHT, A BUFALO BILL TATTOO.
HE ENLISTED IN LIVERPOOL, ON 15/07/1915. SERVED WITH THE 8TH YORK & LANCS REGIMENT. POSTED TO FRANCE, ON 02/01/1916. KILLED ON 01/07/1916, AGED 36, BURIED ON THE SOMME.
HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS MOTHER, CATHERINE AND SISTER IN LAW, FLORENCE, WHO WAS MARRIED TO HIS BROTHER, JOSEPH. THEY WERE BOTH WAR WIDOWS.
HIS NAME IS LISTED ON THE ST CHARLES’ BORROMEO CHURCH MEMORIAL, JARRATT STREET, HULL.
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON THE 13TH NOVEMBER 1916, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *
HIS BROTHER PTE, ANTHONY WALSH (1874-1916), 20015, EYR & 4689 YORK AND LANCS, HAD BEEN DISCHARGED FROM THE ARMY SUFFERING FROM MANIA AND DIED IN BEVERLEY ASYLUM, ON 22/04/1916. HIS OTHER BROTHER, JOSEPH EDWARD WALSH DIED AS A PRISONER OF WAR IN GERMANY ON 2ND JANUARY 1917.
