BORN HULL 1893. SON OF JOHN HENRY & SARAH ANNIE WARD, 35 HAVELOCK STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). BEFORE THE WAR HE WAS A WOOD SAWYER AND WELL KNOWN ON HESSLE ROAD WHERE HE WORKED.
HE ENLISTED IN THE HULL PALS AT THE START OF THE WAR. SERVED WITH THE 10TH EYR IN EGYPT AND FRANCE. DIED OF GUNSHOT WOUNDS TO THE THIGH, ON 22/09/1916, AGED 23. HE WAS ENGAGED AND HAD HAD APPLIED FOR MARRIED LEAVE BEFORE HE WAS WOUNDED.
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON THE 27TH SEPTEMBER 1916, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *
BURIED AT MERVILL FRANCE, HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “ONE OF BRITAIN’S HEROES IN THE WATCHFUL CARE OF GOD”.
