Born Beverley 28/07/1897. Son of James B Wardell (1866-1917) and Hannah Mary Railton (Lived at 5 George Street, Beverley, East Yorkshire (1901 Census) and 45 Mill Lane, Beverley (1911 Census). Educated at the Spencer Council School. He enlisted on 25/03/1915 aged 17. Was employed as an Orderly Room Clerk for 15 months on account of his age. Served as Private, 15890, Coldstream Guards, 2nd Battalion Household Battalion. went to France in December 1916. Took part in the Guards attack on 31/07/1917. Killed in Action, on the 9th October 1917 aged 20. The Guards Brigade took part in the Battle of Poelcapelle, Passchendaele and attacked the German line near Langemarck, Belgium. He is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium. His Corporla described him as “always bright and cheeerful”
