BORN HULL 30/01/1895. SON OF WILLIAM AND ELLEN WARRELL, BLACKLEY MANCHESTER. EDUCATED AT MOSTON SCHOOL.
ENSLISTED IN THE 6TH MANCHESTER REGIMENT, ON 09/02/1915, IN WHICH HE ACTED AS A MACHINE GIN INSTRUCTOR. GAZETTED TO THE 5TH LANCASHIRER FUSILIERS, ON 05/08/1916. ATTACHED TO THE 2ND BATTALION, AND PROCEEDED TO FRANCE IN JANUARY 1917. TOOK PART IN THE FIGHTING AT ROUEN, AND MANY OTHER ENGAGEMENTS. HE WAS KILLED AT PASCHENDAELE, ON 09/10/1917, AGED 22. SHOT BY A SNIPER, LEADING HIS MEN INTO ACTION. HIS COMMANDING OFFICER, WROTE, ” HE WAS VERY EFFICIENT ALWAYS CHEERFUL, AND WILLING TO DO ANY JOB THAT HAD TO BE DONE.” ANOTHER CAPTAIN, HUNTABLE, SAID “…IN THE ATTACK ON THE CHEMICAL WORKS AT ROUEN ON 3RD MAY 1917, HE WAS THE ONLY OFFICER LEFT IN THE FRONT LINE, AND ALONE HE COLLECTED WHAT WAS LEFT OF HIS BATTALION UNDER HIS COMMAND. HE HAD TOO, THE GREAT GIFT OF UNDERSTANDING HOW TO TREAT HIS MEN.”
HE WAS UNMARRIED. THE YOUNG BROTHER OF BEATRICE, NELLIE, WILLIAM AND HARRY WARRELL.
HIS DEATH IS RECORDED IN THE DE RUVIGNY ROLL OF HONOUR, VOLUME 4.
HE IS COMMEMORATED AT THE TYNE COT MEMORIAL: West-Vlaanderen, Belgium
