Watson, William MID

BORN HEDON 1881. SON OF THE LATE JAMES WATSON (1848-1909) AND MARGARET YETTS RUTHERFORD (1855-1920), of HOLYROOD HOUSE, HEDON, HULL. SON OF A SOLICITOR OF MESSRS, WATSON, CARRICK & SONS, PARLIAMENT STREET, HULL. HE BELONGED TO A FAMILY WELL KNOWN IN HULL AND HOLDERNESS. HE WAS EDUCATED AND TRAINED FOR A MILITARY CAREER AND HAD SEEN SERVICE IN INDIA. HE WAS ALSO A WELL KNOWN POLO PLAYER.

HE SERVED AS LIEUTENANT COLONEL, IN THE 1ST SOMERSET LIGHT INFANTRY, COMMANDING THE 2ND/5TH KING’S OWN YORKSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY. HE HAD BEEN WOUNDED  AND MENTIONED THREE TIMES IN DESPATCHES. KILLED IN ACTION, ON 03/05/1917, AGED 36. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 08/05/1917.

HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE ARRAS MEMORIAL TO THE MISSING, FRANCE.

HE IS ONE OF 18 NAMES LISTED ON THE WW1 MEMORIAL, IVY LANE, HEDON.
