BORN OTTRINGHAM, 1890. SON OF JOHN WELDON (1849-1923) AND ELLEN HARRISON (1853-1900). SON OF A WIDOWED LAND GRAINER IN PATRINGTON, LIVING AT BOREAS HILL FARM, PAUL. HE WORKED AS A FARM WAGGONER IN HEDON AND PAUL (1911 CENSUS). HE LIVED WITH HIS SISTER HANNAH JOPLING AT 16 ROBERTS TERRACE, MARMADUKE STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS).
THOMAS WELDON ENLISTED IN HULL ON 16/09/1914, AGED 23 YEARS AND 11 MONTHS. HIS MILITARY RECORDS DESCRIBE HIM AS 5 FOOT, 8.5 INCHES TALL, 161 LBS WEIGHT, 38.5 INCH CHEST, BROWN EYES AND DARK BROWN HAIR, WESLEYAN RELIGION, BIRTHMARK ON HIS LEFT LEG. FORMERLY GUNNER, 87, HULL HEAVY BATTERY, EAST YORKSHIRE. HE WAS DISCHARGED ON 16/03/1915, DUE TO EPILEPSY. HE WAS DESCRIBED AS HARDWORKING, A CAREFUL DRIVER AND USEFUL SOLDER. HE RE-ENLISTED AS PRIVATE, 25441, 6TH KING’S OWN YORKSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY. WAS REPORTED KILLED IN ACTION ON THE 19TH AUGUST 1916. HE WAS 26 YEARS OLD AND COMMEMORATED ON THE THIEPVAL MEMORIAL TO THE MISSING AT THE SOMME. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS SISTER HANNAH JOBBING. HIS NAME WAS INSCRIBED ON THE MARMADUKE STREET ROLL OF HONOUR. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 13/09/1916 & HDM 16/09/1916. *
HE IS ALSO RECORDED ON THE THORNGUMBOLD VILLAGE MEMORIAL, WHERE 65 MEN SERVED AND 9 DIED IN WW1.
HIS BROTHER, DRIVER, WILLIAM EWART WELDON, ROYAL FIELD ARTILLERY, DIED OF WOUNDS ON 23/03/1919 AND IS BURIED IN HULL. HIS OTHER BROTHER, PTE. J. J. WELDON, 12321, KING’S ROYAL RIFLE CORPS, WAS ALSO WOUNDED.
