BORN LOCKINGTON, YORKSHIRE, 1881. SON OF LOT WHITTON (1848-1926 )AND JANE WHITTON, OF 37 BROOK STREET, DRIFFIELD. HE HAD A HALF BROTHER ALBERT AND TWO SISTERS, MABLE AND DORA.
HE MARRIED ALICE JANE ASHWELL (1878-1929), AT ST MATTHEWS CHIRCH HULL, ON 06/12/1902. THEY LIVED WITH THEIR THREE CHILDREN AT, 4 ST GEORGES AVENUE, REDBOURNE STREET, HULL. THIS WAS HIS ARMY RECORDS ADDRESS. HE WORKED AS A RAILWAY CHECKER. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT 4 INCHES TALL, 34 INCH CHEST.
HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 01/12/1915 AND CALLED UP FOR SERVICE ON 27/06/1917. FORMERLY, PRIVATE, 38481, EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. POSTED TO FRANCE, ON 09/11/1917. TRANSFERRED AS PRIVATE, 45836, TO THE 2ND/4TH YORK AND LANCASTER REGIMENT, 9TH PLATOON. WOUNDED IN THE HAND, ON 20/07/1918. HE WAS DUE HOME ON LEAVE WHEN HE WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON 12/09/1918, AGED 37. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE VIS-EN-ARTOIS MEMORIAL, FRANCE.
HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE RETURNED TO HIS WIDOWALICE. SHE WAS ILL, BUT WROTE TO THE AUTHORITIES ASKING FOR HIS ROSARY, WALLET, MONEY HAD PHOTOS.
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON THE 31ST DECEMBER 1918, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *
