BORN HULL 1883. KNOWN AS “TOT”. SON OF JOHN PHILIP WITHERS AND CLEMENTINA HARROW, AT 8, WYKE STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS).
HE LIVED WITH AUNT AT 14 OLIVE TERRACE, HOTHAM STREET, HULL. HE HAD BEEN A REGULAR SOLDIER AND SERVED IN INDIA FOR EIGHT YEARS. A RESERVIST FOR FOUR YEARS.
HE WORKED AS A SHIP YARD LABOURER AND WAS WELL KNOWN IN EAST HULL. AT THE OUTBREAK OF WAR, HE WAS IN CANADA AND RETURNED HOME TO ENLIST.
HE ENLISTED IN HULL. SERVING WITH HIS OLD ROYAL GARRISON ARTILLERY REGIMENT. A GUNNER. HE WAS KILLED BY A SHELL, AT GALLIPOLI, ON 03/08/1915, AGED 32. HE LEFT HIS ARMY EFFECTS TO HIS FATHER, JOHN.
HIS DEATH WAS RECORDED IN THE HULL TIMES, ON 28/08/1915, AND HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 25/08/1915, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *
HIS YOUNGER BROTHER, PTE, ARTHUR WITHERS, 12892, 3RD COLDSTREAM GUARDS, WAS KILLED BY A SHELL IN FRANCE, ON THE 20/05/1915. HIS FATHER HAD LOST BOTH SONS IN 1915, WITHIN 10 WEEKS.
