BORN HULL 22/03/1881. SON OF LATE JOSEPH ALFRED WOOD (1850-1912) & HELEN MARION HARRISON (1859-1914), AT 8, MIDDLETON VILLAS, CLYDE STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). HE HAD TWO BROTHERS. JOINED THE ROYAL NAVY RESERVE, ON 24/06/1896, AGED 15. A SAILOR AND FISHERMAN. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 6 INCHES TALL, LIGHT BROWN HAIR, HAZEL EYES, TATTOOED LEFT LITTLE FINGER.
HE SERVED ON THE CARGO SHIP, ‘SHIPCOTE’, WHICH LEFT ARCHANGEL FOR LE HAVRE, WITH A CARGO OF GRAIN IN BAGS. IT WAS REPORTED MISSING ON 13TH NOVEMBER 1915. HER 29 CREW WERE NEVER HEARD AGAIN. AT THE TIME OF THE LOSS THE VESSEL WAS OWNED BY SPRINGFIELD STEAM SHIPPING COMPANY, LTD OF LIVERPOOL. WILLIAM WOOD WAS PRESUMED DROWNED ON THE 13TH NOVEMBER 1915, AGED 34.
HE IS REMEMBERED ON THE ST MATTHEWS CHURCH MEMORIAL, BOULEVARD, AND ON THE HULL MERCHANT NAVY ROLL OF HONOUR AND TOWER HILL NAVAL MEMORIAL, LONDON.
