Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE GEORGE FREDERICK WRIDE 11/387. Born in Bermondsey in 1888, George was the son of Alice Wride. The family moved north to Hull soon after George was born and it was here he met and married Ada Taylor on 24th June 1909. George earned his living as a Tram Conductor and the couple lived at 7 Windsor Avenue, Exmouth Street with their three children Marion, Frederick and John. Ironically he had attempted to join His Majesty’s forces in peacetime but had been refused on the grounds of having varicose veins. They were not so fussy on 8th September 1914 when he enlisted for the 11th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, 2nd Hull Pals. At some stage fate dealt him a losing hand and he transferred to the 12th Battalion who formed part of the spearhead of the 13th November 1916 attacks on Serre as part of the last desperate action of the Somme campaign. George was killed in action with so many other Originals, and his body never recovered. George Wride is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial; he was 28 years old.
